'Akira' review

Akira
If you are trying to get a friend into anime, there is one movie that should immediately come to mind; 1980’s animation Akira. For nearly 30 years, this movie has rocked the world of anime. The story is brilliant, the artwork and animation, despite its age, is gorgeous, and the dialogue is genius. Akira, however, is not meant for children to watch. There is gore, brutality, nudity, vulgar language, and violence. But, the good thing about it is that it’s there for a reason. Akira would not be the same had the intense violence been edited out. It creates the emotion that drives the story; anger, helplessness, pity, passion, and despair. The ‘adult themes’ in the movie make the storyline more relatable, more realistic, and more captivating then it would have censored. In a nut shell, the movie takes place in post-apocalyptic Tokyo, Japan, or ‘Neo Tokyo’, after an atomic bomb destroyed half the country. The main character, the leader of a biker gang, Kaneda, goes through a psychologically traumatic series of events which include searching for his mutating friend who has developed terrifying telekinetic powers, dodging the military, and witnessing what could possibly be a second apocalypse.
In my opinion, this is the best anime movie to date. The first time I watched this movie, I was around the age of 5, and even then, I thought this movie was brilliant. Looking back on it now, I remember all of the little details that made the movie what it is today; amazing. A must see for those wanting to get into anime. It’ll prove that not all Japanese animation consists of cuddly pocket monsters and pretty super girls…
